How do you find home when your world is falling apart?
Ralph stands in Heathrow Terminal 5 waiting for his dad’s plane to land. Ever since his mum died, Ralph and his dad have grown further and further apart: his dad is always in America for work and with Ralph at boarding school, they hardly see each other. So Ralph spends most of his weekends and holidays with his English grandparents. Even when Ralph and his dad are together, they hardly talk.
But when Ralph gets to the arrivals gate, he finds out that his dad’s flight has been cancelled. He tries to call his dad on his mobile but it goes straight to voice mail. Ralph doesn’t understand why his dad didn’t call him straight away when the flight was cancelled: even though they’ve been distant, his dad always stays in touch, especially when he’s travelling. Ralph knows it’s because of what happened to his mum.
In Boston, 17-year-old Air wakes up with start. She checks her phone to see if there’s a message from her mum, who’s flown out to London for work: she was meant to land late afternoon. But there’s no message. A moment later, Air’s dad comes into her bedroom and tells her that mum’s plane has gone missing.
A terrifying incident now draws Air and Ralph together as they connect over fear, grief, life and love.
